To take the best bird and wildlife photographers, and to make a living from photography had always been my dream.
I read through all the magazines, forums, books, bought and rented different cameras and lenses, used the exact settings as advised, and followed the post-processing workflows and travelled to many places.
When I shared the photos and submitted to contests, what happened? Crickets!
I thought it was gonna be super-easy. But it wasn’t!!!
It was a period of frustration and self-doubt. I had no idea what's wrong with my photography. To me, they seemed to be fine, and were on par with some great photos taken by the pros.
I was doing everything “right!” but it just didn’t work! 😭
I would spend hours and hours waiting in the field for that special moment, and family and good friends gave me encouragement, "You are a natural. You are doing great."
But I know they were just comforting me.
Fast forward 5 years, still nothing worked. But something needs to change.
So, I did a full 180! I tossed out the conventional advice and decide to do the exact opposite. I reverse engineered how humans react to a scene and read thru the art history and borrowed ideas from the grandmasters in oil painting and visual design.
I shifted my focus to taking photos that were not just perfect in image quality, but also tell a story and evoke emotion.
And guess what?
My photos, when shared online, went from less than 10 likes to thousands of likes, from a few comments of "nice" to hundreds of comments. People writing to me how they were moved by my photos. They opened up to tell me their life stories.
I created a genuine connection through my art.
Soon my friends suggested I submit photos to contests. At the time I didn't even know that there are photo contests.
But knowing that by winning photo contests, it will be published in magazines and exhibits, it will really bring awareness to people about these animals and eventually help conservation, I was eager to try.
And to my surprise, the first few times I tried, I won numerous awards every time, including the Grand Prize in Nature's Best Photography, the cover and Top 10 in NANPA, etc.
Fast forward to a few years later, I got invited as judge for international contests, including Nature Photographer of The Year and Bird Photographer of the Year, and Share-The-View. One organizer told me that they received messages from numerous photographers who won awards in their contest, that they won because they have learned from me.
Just very recently, I was selected as one of the 15 famous wildlife photographers to know by Nature TTL among some of the most legendary photographers which I am very honored. (See below)
So what had happened!
The secret? It’s simpler than you might think.
I zeroed in on the key elements that make a photo works, and ignore everything else i’d been taught that had wasted so much of my time.
This method works for any ordinary people who have a job, or have a busy schedule. You don't need to be a professional full time photographer to realize your dreams.
Now, I share my method with the students of Sharp Winning Photos 2.0, helping them navigate the same path.
And the beauty of it all?
Once you can pull this off, the reaction from the viewers and the recognition will be like automatic.
With each outing, you will know exactly what and how to capture certain moments, and wait for the impact you can make with your photography when you share them.
